Winifred (Winnie) Standish, Allied Health Coordinator at Middlesex Community College (MxCC), was recently honored as one of the 2007 Women in Leadership by Women and Families Center.

The award was presented at the “In the Company of Leaders Benefit Luncheon.” Standish, in addition to being the Allied Health Coordinator at MxCC, teaches the Certified Nurse Aide (CNA) program at the college. Under her direction, the program has grown, graduating one hundred and fifty graduates this past year.

Standish was selected in recognition of her achievements, dedication to her profession and community endeavors, and being an exemplary role model for women. “I nominated Winnie Standish for this award because of her unrelenting dedication to both the nursing profession and the education of future nurses,” said Women and Families Center Open DOHR Employment and Training Coordinator Michael V Buccilli. “Time after time she goes above and beyond to help all students especially those with the greatest needs. She is a tremendous asset to our community and should be publicly recognized for her work in the area of allied health.”

Standish is an upbeat, positive individual who loves teaching and who receives joy from her students. “Watching them learn not only the role of a CNA but also learn their own worth as people in our world is very rewarding to me. They gain self-confidence and pride in their work and themselves. I am lucky to be part of that experience.”

A graduate of the Kings County Hospital School of Nursing and Sloan-Kettering School for Enterostomal Therapy, Standish was a head nurse at Hartford Hospital and is proudest of her over 34 years of hands-on nursing. She was also the first Enterostomal Therapist in private practice in the State of Connecticut.

“MxCC community is proud of Winnie Standish and her efforts to assist students. Winnie's caring ways and commitment to student learning and growth have led to student success. The award from Women and Families Center is a wonderful recognition that celebrates Winnie and all her good work. We are fortunate to have Winnie as a colleague and friend at our college,” said Middlesex Community College President Wilfredo Nieves.
