Middlesex Community College Presented Update on Marriage Equality and Adoption

By Alice Stelzer

This week, the President’s Committee on Diversity (PCOD) at Middlesex Community College sponsored a discussion, on marriage equality and co-parent adoption, led by Janet Peck of the Love Makes a Family organization.

During Peck’s presentation, entitled “Marriage Equality - A Human Rights Issue," she talked about how she became an activist for gay rights and told the audience the issue of marriage equality is now before Connecticut’s Supreme Court.

Peck urged those that feel that same sex marriage should be legal to contact their legislators, saying the legislators have to know what their constituents want.

“Marriage means something to me beyond the rights. Marriage is more (then civil union) in our culture and throughout the world. The word marriage has power. The institution of marriage is honored and a civil union says I’m not good enough,” Peck said, explaining why marriage with her partner, Carol, is an emotional issue for her. “Marriage reflects the deep love Carol and I have lived for over 30 years.”

On the co-parent adoption issue Peck told the audience that Connecticut is one of only eight states that allow same sex couples to adopt.

MxCC student Jennifer Sharp found Peck’s talk, “Informative and enlightening. The speaker is very passionate about her cause.”

This program, in observance of Gay Lesbian Bisexual Transgender month, is part of the college’s PCOD continuing efforts to build awareness and community networking that relates to the support of a multicultural perspective by involving MxCC students, staff and the public in ongoing discussions on intercultural relations and attitudes.
