Diane the American Swimmer:
An installation of works from an ongoing project by Diane Dwyer
February 12 through May 3, 2007
Brooklyn, New York based artist Diane Dwyer, has developed the “Diane the American Swimmer” character through a series of video documented performances, internet projects and multimedia images
Diane the American Swimmer is a pseudo bionic athlete and renaissance personality attracting global media attention as she prepares for the first ever swim on the planet Mars. This seasoned all-star long distance swimmer, bipartisan political personality and trusted presidential mentor poses as an iconic symbol of Americanism. Her candid slogan, “She Swims for You,” is a universally selfless motto that defines her confident Atlas-like public persona. Now at the end of the nation’s decades long struggle to remain a world superpower; the aged tradition of American individualism has fallen to the wayside as the country desperately bands together in a singular push toward interplanetary colonization. Our sovereign neighbor, “The Red Planet” is no longer the mysterious, distant stage of science fiction, but has been systematically tamed by recent advances in science, engineering and astronomics. Mars is now a truly plausible and inevitable site for American expansionism and modern manifestation of the Garden of Eden. In the recent worldwide announcement of Diane the American Swimmer’s plans for the big swim she humbly stated; “I am an Aquanaut. I learned to swim when I was very little. BeforE I learned to swim, I was afraid to put my face in the water. Then I was on Swim TEAM, at theY, when I was a little older. That is were I learned to have teaM Spirit. I am currently training with NASA for my mission to MARS.” The world eagerly watches for news of Diane the American Swimmer’s anticipated mission to Mars through her frequently updated website: www.dianetheamericanswimmer.com
