Sculpture: Identity of Play

For Immediate Release:

"The Identity of Play” Works in Sculpture by Joe Dal Pra
November 13, 2006 – February 1, 2007

Joe Dal Pra’s mixed media sculpture and drawings embody a confrontational and at times playful, pop art spirit. His work taps into the visual language of children’s toys, tools, weapons, picnic tables, and comic book style imagery supporting a cast of characters the artist describes as “hero boy, jesters, jolly men and authority figures.” These works suggest ambiguous and residual narratives as juxtapositions of the quirky and uncanny against more directed questions of love, memory and identity. The common denominator of Dal Pra’s work is his confrontational and antagonistic artistic practice initially disguised as “play.” These works challenge viewer’s to decode these almost familiar forms of popular culture and to narrate Dal Pra’s own personal mythology.

The Niche space is located on the first floor of Founders Hall.

Hours: Monday – Thursday - 8am- 8pm and Friday & Saturday - 8am- 4pm
