Works on Paper by Carolina Guimarey
May 14 through September 7, 2007

Carolina Guimarey's mixed media abstractions visually and conceptually synthesize image, form and trace processes. These small-scale works reveal their identity as studio explorations of surface, material and texture as a means to suggest our shared origins of a universal base materialism. Grided and organic compositions contain pigmented patterns reminiscent of textile and quilt designs yet emanate a distinctly raw aesthetic. Guimarey states that these ".pictorial elements become the theme and medium as well. From that connection with the inner rough essence of the elements I go deep into the origin of objects. I'm intrigued by the condition of primitive, ancient, sacred. Origin in terms of creation, the beginnings of the human race, the beginnings of times, the first hours on the Earth"

The intimate physical nature of these "objects" contains an aura of their own making inviting viewers to apply a personal sense of narrative, ritual and expressive function to each of these works.

The Niche space is located on the first floor of Founders Hall.

Hours: Monday – Thursday - 8:30am- 6pm and Friday & Saturday - 8:30am- 4:30pm
