I just want to take a few online classes at MxCC; I do not want to enroll in a degree program—what do I write on my admissions application?
When you fill out the paper application for admission (PDF), check the box on page 5 that states "I do not wish to be a degree seeking student at this time."
I want to take some online classes and work towards a degree from MxCC.
In order to enter a degree program, you must be able to furnish a copy of your high school diploma and proof of immunization for Measles, Mumps, and Rubella. Without this, a hold will be placed on your account and you will not be eligible to register, so please make sure you can provide these items up front. If you cannot, in the Application for Admission, check that you are not a degree seeking student—you can always switch to degree-seeking once you have the aforementioned items.
I took credit classes at MxCC years ago. Do I need to fill out the application for admission?
You must fill out a readmit form instead of an application for admission. However, if you took non-credit, high school partnership, or continuing education courses, you must fill out the application for admission.

Visit this page to determine the price of the courses in which you are interested.

I need to take a class but it's full. What do I do?
Distance Learning cannot grant overrides into online classes that are at capacity, nor can we monitor the status of courses on behalf of students.
If you are a continuing student (took classes at MxCC in the semester immediately preceding this one), you can monitor the status on your own and, if a space becomes available, you can register online (provided the course has no prerequisites). Click here for instructions on how to monitor enrollment status.
Those interested in online learning elsewhere can find information about other online courses being offered in CT by doing a course search at two sites. Doing a search at http://my.commnet.edu will provide results for courses at CT Community Colleges. Searching http://www.ctdlc.org provides information on online courses offered at colleges throughout Connecticut, both 2- and 4-year, public and private institutions.
What is considered proof of a prerequisite?
In order to take a class that has prerequisites, you must be able to furnish a copy of your transcripts which includes both your name and the grade you earned in the prerequisite course. This can be an unofficial transcript, but it must meet the aforementioned criteria. For math and English classes, or classes that have math or English prerequisites, you must take the placement test and provide your placement test scores. If you qualify for the class, proof of placement test scores will enable you to register. If you did not earn qualifying scores, you cannot register for the desired classes.
I am an MxCC student and I'd like to take online classes at another Connecticut Community College. How do I go about this?
Each college has a different method they follow to enroll students in online courses. You will need to fill out an application for admissions so contact the school's admissions counselors first. Ask the admissions counselor for a contact who can help determine how to register for online courses. Some colleges require that you go to the campus to meet with an advisor and register in person. Other colleges have identified people who can help. You should talk with your advisor at MxCC to be sure that the other school's online class will transfer in to MxCC as the type of credits you need. After that, if you receive financial aid from MxCC, contact our financial aid department to see if your financial aid can be applied to the host institution. This depends on several factors-- if it can be done, you should then contact a financial aid person from the school to which you're applying. If you need to find phone numbers for MxCC staff, visit http://www.mxcc.commnet.edu/distance/phone.shtml.
How does it (an online class) work?
You sign onto Blackboard Vista, our online learning system. You have a syllabus that you’ll follow and you’ll submit all assignments, exams, and projects online. Many classes use weekly online discussions to generate class participation. Our courses require active participation throughout the week. You must log on several times a week, participate in discussions, and complete assignments, assessments, and course requirements in order to be successful in an online course.
How much time does it take?
You will be online each week for at least the same amount of time you’d be in a classroom. Just like in an on-campus class, every week you must complete the class objectives by doing assignments, papers, projects, exams, and reading text, articles, etc.
Do online classes cover the same material as on-campus classes?
Yes, the same information is covered. Course descriptions can be found in the course catalog or online at the College web site: www.mxcc.commnet.edu

How do I know if the courses will transfer to my current college?

What happens if I have computer problems during the semester?
You must have a back up plan if something happens to your computer. You can use computers on campus but remember that you will be limited to the open hours of the lab facilities. Using computers at public libraries, internet cafes, etc., can be problematic because the versions of java, browsers, etc. might not be compatible with Vista. Your back up plan must include using a computer to which you can download and install programs if necessary (or the MxCC lab computers). All computers must have high-speed internet connection. You can always contact our help desk for assistance with technology troubleshooting.
I have a two-week planned vacation during the semester and I am not able to access Internet during my vacation, can I still take an online class?
Although an online class does not require you to attend the class at certain times, class work such as assignments, tests, projects, etc. must be submitted by certain due dates. If you do not submit the work on time, you might be penalized or lose the opportunity to make up this work, which could result in a lower grade. You MUST ask the professor prior to registering for the class to see if the professor is willing to accommodate your special request.
