Part 1: NetID The following video tutorial is presented by the Distance Learning Department at Middlesex Community College in Middletown CT. Slide 1-2 As a student enrolled at Middlesex Community College, you have access to a variety of technology resources. You are able to use on-campus computers in a computer lab, a computer classroom, and the college libraries at all 12 of the Connecticut Community Colleges. Either on- or off-campus, you may use MyCommNet to access Student Self-Service, Blackboard Vista, or library databases. Slide 1-3 Your Banner ID#, also known as your Student ID#, may be found on your admission confirmation letter or your receipt from the Business Office after you have registered for a course. Your Banner ID# is an 8-digit number starting with an @ symbol such as @00898909 Slide 1-4 To log onto a campus computer or MyCommNet, you need to use your NetID and password. Your NetID is composed of your BannerID and @student.commnet.edu. For example, if your Banner ID is @00898909, your NetID would be 00898909@student.commnet.edu. Slide 1-5 You may find your NetID at https://www.commnet.edu/netid/lookupnetid.asp At this web site, enter your last name, your date of birth, and the last 4-digits of your social security number. Then select the Click Here to Search button to get your NetID. Slide 1-6 If you are a brand new MxCC student and have not logged into a campus computer or MyCommNet yet, use the initial password. Your initial password is the combination of the first three letters of your birth month with the first letter capitalized, the & symbol, and the last four-digit of your social security number. Slide 1-7 For example, if you were born in April and your last four-digit of your social security number is 6789, your initial password would be Apr&6789. Slide 1-8 Use your NetID and initial Password to log on to a campus computer or myCommNet, whichever comes first. This is an example of using the NetID and initial password to log on to a campus computer. Press Ctrl, Alt, Delete keys all together, you will then be prompted to enter a username and password. You will enter your NetID… and your initial password in this example. If you have three failed login attempts, you will be locked out. After 30 minutes, you will be unlocked automatically and may try logging in again. Slide 1-9 If you have logged into the System correctly with proper NetID and Initial Password The System will immediately ask you to create a new Password. Slide 1-10 The new password must be at least 8 characters in length and satisfy 3 out of 4 rules: capital letter, lower case letter, numbers, and special characters. Slide 1-11 Do not use your name, birthday, or social security number to create a new password. The MyCommNet system will not allow these to be used for your new password. Example of an acceptable password would be: Flowers11. Slide 1-12 If you have taken a credit course at any of 12 Connecticut community colleges before and have used the NetID and password, you use the same NetID and Password to access MxCC computers and MyCommNet. You may use the bookmarks as a reference when you first attempt to log on to a campus computer or MyCommNet. Slide 1-15 If you need to reset your NetID Password, you may first try to reset it online by going to my.commnet.edu Slide 1-16 Once you are at my.commnet.edu, click on the Forgot Your Password? Link. Slide 1-17 Follow the steps to reset your password. You MUST know the answer to you Security Question to use the online NetID password web site. Slide 2-2 MyCommNet is a “portal” that allows students to simultaneously sign onto multiple systems using one logon--their NetID and Password. Through myCommNet, you will have access to Student Self-Service, Blackboard Vista, and the library databases. MyCommNet serves as a single point of entry for all members of the community college system and is available from any computer with internet access. Slide 2-3 To access MyCommNet, first open a web browser and go to my.commnet.edu. There are two areas you may access, a Public Area and a Secured Area. On the MyCommNet homepage, you may click on the Search for Courses link in the middle - right of the page to look up courses for registration. Slide 2-4 Select search criteria such as college, semester, and course type. Click on the Get the Courses button to complete the search. Slide 2-5 You will then view a list of courses with location, time, textbook information, seats, and instructor. The course search in MyCommNet reflects the most recent course information with location, enrollment, and faculty assignment. It will help you decide which courses you may take before registration. Slide 2-6 In the Secured Area of MyCommNet, you are able to access Student Self-Service, Blackboard Vista, and library databases. You need to log on with your NetID and Password to access the Secured Area. Slide 2-7 To log into MyCommNet, you need to use your NetID and password. Slide 2-17 Once you have logged into the MyCommNet - Secured Area, you are able to access the following three systems: Student Self-Service, Blackboard Vista, and Library Databases. Slide 2-18 MyCommNet Alert is a new notification system that delivers important information such as inclement weather campus closings and emergency notices to your personal cell phone via text messages. We encourage all students to sign up for this service. It’s free, quick and easy. Slide 3-2 Student Self-Service is where students may go online to access their Course Schedule, Final Grades, and Financial Aid. It is also where you go to register online after your first semester, get Textbook Information for your courses, fill out course evaluations for your on-campus courses, and access your unofficial and official transcripts. Slide 3-3 Go to my.commnet.edu and log into the MyCommNet Secured area using your NetID and Password. Slide 3-4 Once you are logged onto the MyCommNet Secured Area, click on Student tab. Slide 3-5 In the Student Tab, click on the link under Student Self-Service. Slide 3-6 Choose Middlesex Community College in the next screen. Slide 3-7 You may check your course schedule by clicking on the Registration & Payment link. Slide 3-8 Click on the Student Detail Schedule link. You will see the classes you have registered with location, time, instructor, and textbook information. Clicking on the Main Menu tab allows you to go back to the previous screen. Slide 3-9 The Connecticut community college system does not provide students with a college email account.  When you apply to our college, you have the option to provide a personal email address for college communication purposes.   It is important that you provide an active email address to the college since your professor may use this email for course communication. If you would like to provide Middlesex with a new or updated email address, you may do so in Student Self-Service. Click on the Personal Information link. Slide 3-10 In the Personal Information area, click on the Update Email Address link. This will take you to a new page where you will select Personal Email in the Types of Email to Insert drop down menu. Click the Submit button. Enter your valid email address twice and click the Submit button. Slide 3-11 Check your Financial Aid status by clicking on the Financial Aid link. Slide 3-12 At the end of a semester, you will check your final grades by clicking on the Student Records link. Slide 3-13 Click on the Final Grade link. The college will not mail your grades. This is the only place you will obtain your grades for the classes you take. About two days after final grades are due, you are able to view your grades . You may view or print out an unofficial transcript by clicking on Unofficial Transcript link. You may request an official transcript by clicking on the Request Official Transcript link. Slide 3-14 At the end of a semester, students are able to access course evaluations in Student Self-Service via MyCommNet. At MxCC, this evaluation form is used ONLY for evaluating on-campus courses. You need to fill out the evaluation for every on-campus course you take. Online courses will have a unique course evaluation link in the Blackboard Vista course. Slide 4-2 Blackboard Vista is a learning management system that all MxCC online and hybrid courses use. Many on-campus courses also use it. Blackboard Vista allows your professor to provide course materials such as syllabus, notes, and study guides. It features announcement, calendar, email, discussions, and chat tools for you to communicate with your professor and fellow students within a course. Some professors may also use Blackboard Vista’s assessment tools to collect assignments and have students take an online exam. Slide 4-3 All of MxCC’s online and hybrid courses use Blackboard Vista. 65% of on-campus courses use it, also. Your on-campus course professor will notify you if your course uses Blackboard Vista. Slide 4-4 You may access Blackboard Vista via MyCommNet. Go to my.commnet.edu. Log into MyCommNet’s Secured Area with your NetID and Password. Slide 4-5 After you have logged on to MyCommNet Secured Area with your NetID and Password, click on the Blackboard Vista icon in the top right of the web page. Slide 4-6 This will take you to your My Blackboard page. Two weeks prior to the 1st day of the semester, you will see the courses you are registered for listed under the Course List. Click on the Course Title to enter the course’s Blackboard Vista Home Page. Slide 4-7 Additionally, MxCC provides two Blackboard Vista sites for all students: Virtual Campuses and Research Help. Starting the second week of the semester, you will see the two sites listed under your Course List on your My Blackboard page. Please explore these sites to learn about Blackboard Vista, on-campus activities, online resources, and help with advising and library research.
