Remember...

Writing is a process. When you begin working with a tutor, the tutor will help you locate your major errors and teach you how to correct them and how to avoid them in your next paper. As you practice what you've learned, your writing will improve.

Grades reflect your teacher's perception of your learning. Coming in for help does not mean that the paper you are working on will receive an A, however, as you continue to learn specific writing skills, your papers will continue to show improvement.

Tips for Success

  • Come in as soon as you need help.
  • Write as much as you can of your paper before you come.
  • Make more than one attempt.
  • Write down your questions. When tutors don't have all the answers, they can direct you to the appropriate resources.
  • During your tutoring sessions, take notes on what the tutor teaches you.
  • Apply what you've learned to subsequent work.
  • Take responsibility for your grade. Tutoring doesn't guarantee a particular grade. Tutoring helps you understand the writing process so you improve.

What You May Expect of a Tutor

You may expect your tutor to:

  • help you understand the process
  • help you choose a topic
  • help you discover a thesis
  • help you organize and develop proofs
  • teach you specific skills
  • answer your questions
  • direct you to other sources

What You May Not Expect of a Tutor

You may not expect your tutor to:

  • do your homework
  • edit your paper

Also

  • you may not leave a paper to be edited by the tutor
  • you may not come in the last day before an assignment is due and attempt to shift your responsibility onto your tutor
