In The Niche WORKS FROM THE PERMANENT COLLECTION “A SENSE OF PLACE” September 30 - October 31, 2011
“A Sense of Place” consists of six works from the Middlesex Community College Permanent Collection. Each of these works contain distinct perspectives of site that feed the imagination in as much as document perception. “The Sixth Step” by Fine Arts Alumni and adjunct instructor, Aleta Gudelski, is a true investigation of architectonics. Here we peer up a flight of stairs and are invited to imagine the garden terrace barely visible above. “Convent Portal, Grein, Austria” is one of two photographs included by English Professor Emeritus, Bill Nagle. This closely framed image of a deep interior space is dominated by curvilinear white plaster details. The central arch and ceiling is dramatically illuminated by a small open door in the adjacent room. This particular space, as the title suggests, appears transcendent and sacred despite its visually undefined function. A seascape by Yonne Brickey, an imaginative garden space by Laurel Bonham Duvall, and a pond landscape painting by Michael Waller explore similar visual interpretations of the grand and nuanced sensations of place.
The Niche is located on the first floor of Founders Hall and open: Mondays through Fridays 8:30am-4:00pm when classes are in session.
