Professor Pam Frost knows that the idea of math strikes fear
in the hearts of many. However, as a 35-year veteran math
teacher, she also knows math is an important part of every-day life and a
requirement for most students’ educational goals. So she has made it
her mission to create a classroom environment and curriculum that makes
learning math less fearsome and more accessible for
all.
Technology has given her some of the tools and
support to fulfill this mission. Pam teaches self-paced,
traditional, and onlinemath using MyMathLab, a web-based product that
integrate interactive multimedia instruction (video, animation,
multimedia) with textbook content. Students are able to use this
resource in the classroom and when studying from home.
Pam also uses Blackboard learning technology to
engage students and present mathematical concepts in more vibrant ways –
accessible on most of today’s interactive devices. These
innovative tools help create an energetic classroom that welcomes (and
motivates) learners of all levels and
styles.
It also is
important to Pam that students develop the right attitude, work habits,
and approach to learning. While she works with
students to create personalized study plans based on their needs and
abilities, she also encourages them to leverage their own skills to
conquer – and even embrace – math as a vibrant part of their
world.
She has been a teacher at MxCC for 18 years,
and served as the math chair from 2006-2009 (she also is the current
MxCC Mathematics Division interim chair). In addition to her
campus courses, she teaches online math courses through the MxCC
Distance Learning Program, and loves the challenge of interacting with
students in this “new” way.
At MxCC, Pam has served
as a past faculty advisors to the PTK honor society Chair of College
Council and various standing committees, Chair of Faculty Forum,
etc. . She is very involved with the MxCC
Sustainability Team and has been working on a number of sustainable
landscaping projects on campus. Currently she is on the
Legislative Liaison Committee, Transitional Year Task Force and Pilot
Project, and College Affairs Committee at MxCC. She also sits
on the Connecticut Community College System’s Math Issues Committee and
Basic Skills Council.
Off-campus, Pam puts her number
sense to work as treasurer of the non-profit North End Action Team
(NEAT) based in Middletown, which is directed by one of her former
students. She actively participates with the NEAT Hiking Club for kids,
and other NEAT programs, and has served as a mentor for several North
End kids – some of whom have gone on to graduate from MxCC.
Pam received a B.S. in mathematics with a
concentration in secondary education from Towson State University in
Towson, Maryland. She earned a master’s degree in education
with a concentration in mathematics from Western Maryland College in
Westminster. She continues to take numerous classes and
workshops as well as attend a wide variety of professional development
activities.
