In The Niche NANCY GOODRICH, “SACRED & MUNDANE”
January 24 – March 4, 2011 Opening Reception: Thursday, February 3rd, 5:00-7:00pm in Pegasus Gallery
Nancy Goodrich’s solo photography series “Sacred & Mundane” explores the dichotomy of contemporary Christian iconography as popular culture. These images query the seductive power of kitsch as object studies and domestic recreations of sacred image consumption. Goodrich's project statement reveals the exploratory nature of these works:
“I don’t understand my fascination with these objects- objects that are made in the name of sacred beings but that are tacky and used in the everyday world. Does Jesus belong on a clock? And is there a difference between a Greek icon and my hologram Jesus?” Although Goodrich is working from an iconoclastic gaze, her treatment of these objects here is as reverent and emotive as the very subjects in question. The beeswaxed paper negative printing process serves to heighten the miraculous presence of these images through blurring, distorting, and darkened compositional effects. Goodrich has exhibited her photographs throughout the United States and received a 2010 Middletown Commission on the Arts grant and a 2010 Connecticut Commission on Culture and Tourism Artist Fellowship award.
