This competitive degree program prepares students for future work as radiologic technologists in hospitals and medical offices, taking x-rays and administering non-radioactive materials to patients for diagnostic purposes. It also includes an internship component where students gain valuable experience and skills in a clinical setting.

Associate Degree in Radiologic Technology Program

The Radiologic Technology Program prepares students for entry-level employment as radiologic technologists in hospitals and medical offices. It is sponsored by Middlesex Community College and offered jointly with Middlesex Hospital, both located in Middletown, CT. The curriculum covers a 27-month period, with the first 12 months primarily at the college and a 15-month period of technical and clinical training at the hospital, including a 3 month internship (June-August).

Enrollment in the program is restricted by limited clinical facilities. Applicants must first meet the general college admissions procedures (see college catalog). Once these requirements are met, the applicant must provide the college with the following information by March 1 of the year in which admission is sought: results of Basic Skills Assessment; three letters of recommendation from current and/or former teachers and/or employers, or three completed application Information Forms (available at www.radiologyschool.com or www.xrayschool.com), a one-page biography stating goals/reasons for program entry, and present documentation of having attended a four-hour program orientation at Middlesex Hospital. In addition, high school candidates must be in the upper 25 percent of their class and college applicants need a grade point average of at least 2.5 for all college work. A grade of C or better is required in Anatomy & Physiology I & II. Final admission procedures for candidate selection involves an interview with an interview committee and a personal background check, which is a hospital requirement to do clinical training at Middlesex Hospital.

The Associate Degree in Radiologic Technology program typically takes students just over two years to complete. Students will learn an exciting range of skills and gain hands-on experience that sets them ahead of the talent pool when it comes to applying for jobs in the competitive workforce. Courses include psychology, anatomy and physiology, radiographic procedures and patient care.

Middlesex Community College works together with Middlesex Hospital to offer this program, preparing students with valuable technical and clinical training at the hospital as well as a three-month internship.

With a Radiologic Technology degree from MxCC, a student can get entry-level employment as Radiologic technologists in hospitals and medical offices.  Radiologic Technologists take x-rays and administer non-radioactive materials into patients’ bloodstreams for diagnostic purposes.

Jobs as Radiologic Technologists are expected to grow faster than the average for all occupations through 2014, as baby boomers age and the population grows, increasing the need for diagnostic imaging.  Hospitals will remain the primary employer of Radiologic Technologists.

How Long Will You Have To School?

The curriculum covers a 27-month period, with the first 12 months primarily at the college and a 15-month period of technical and clinical training at the hospital, including a 3-month internship (June-August).

It is possible for graduates of a two-year accredited hospital-based program who hold certification by the American Registry of Radiologic Technology to earn credit towards the degree. Admission requirements include: a detailed official transcript from the hospital program from which the student graduated and verification of certification from the American Registry of Radiologic Technology (copy of certificate or copy of registration card).
