English as a Second Language Certificate
You're hard working and motivated. You have great focus when it comes
to your goals. Now you want to learn or improve your English skills -
and build your ability to communicate with others.
Start
today in improving your knowledge and skills and ultimately show
others your potential and ability to be successful socially, at school
and at work.
Earning an English as a Second Language
Certificate from Middlesex Community College will help to prepare you
for success in a future career and in a variety of other settings.
Academic Requirements
The English as a Second Language Certificate program is a 30-credit
track of study. Often students enroll in a degree-granting program at
the same time. This certificate program is designed for students whose
native language is not English.
You will take a blend of exciting courses in this program, such as writing, grammar and public speaking.
Middlesex
will help give you the English language skills necessary for success in
academic studies or in the job market. After successfully completing
the program, you will receive a Competency Certificate in English as a
Second Language.
Jobs You Can Get With An ESL Certificate
The English as a Second Language Certificate is not a vocational program. It does not train students to seek specific jobs. However, certificate completion will show potential employers that the applicant possesses the necessary English language skills to perform the jobs they do seek.
How Long Will You Have To Go To School?
When registering for classes, students take a placement test that determines which level of the program they will enter. As different levels cannot be taken at the same time, it can take several years for a student to complete all the requirements for this certificate. Students may enroll in a degree program at the same time as the ESL certificate program. Continuation with another degree or certificate program is recommended. Many of the credits from this certificate will transfer into other programs at Middlesex, especially the General Studies degree.
Note: Students who place into the higher ESL courses when entering the college may substitute courses in literature, U.S. history, U.S. government or any others devoted to American culture/heritage for each ESL course below their initial placement.
