Introduction to Medical Interpreting

Are you bilingual in Spanish and English with an interest in working in the medical field and directly influencing patient care?  Have you recently completed training for a profession in allied health?  Would you like to make your resume more attractive to potential employers? If so, then you should enroll in this Introduction to Medical Interpreting course, which is geared specifically towards bilingual Spanish and English speakers only.  This brand-new program has been developed to enable bilingual individuals to become competent medical interpreters.  This 48-hour training introduces participants to the goals, roles and responsibilities of the medical interpreter, interpreter ethics, communication strategies, cultural competence, and basic medical terminology in both English and Spanish.

Today, healthcare providers are increasingly seeking trained, qualified, and credentialed interpreters who can help meet the needs of Limited English Proficient patients. Students will learn that communication is fundamental to the relationship between healthcare providers and patients. Regulatory changes and the importance of culturally competent communication are fundamental within healthcare today.  The critical fact is that if the patient cannot be understood, or has specific questions that cannot be answered, there is an increased risk of inaccurate diagnoses.

*Note: The prerequisite orientation session is March 7th.  Please call 860-343-5865 to secure your participation.  Potential students will receive a course syllabus and a presentation on the exciting field of medical interpreting, as well as the current career opportunities and prospects.  The orientation will include a pre-screening test and oral examination to demonstrate English and Spanish proficiency for those interested in entering the program.  A student must be at least 18 years old and present a high school diploma or GED, as well as valid identification to the college prior to registration.
