MxCC Selected for Summer Film Industry Training

Program Receives Economic Development Award
Middlesex Community College has been selected for a second year to host the Summer Film Industry Training Program. It will be one of just two sites in the state, and the only community college, to run the program. The other site will be at Quinnipiac University in Hamden.
The program hosted by Middlesex during the summer of 2008 received an award March 26 from the Connecticut Economic Development Association (CEDAS) for its contribution to economic development in the state.
The film program is an intensive month-long training designed to prepare students to work as crew in the motion picture and television industries.
Specialization areas within the program include:
  • Camera
  • Sound
  • Lighting & grip
  • Assistant director
  • Script supervisor
  • Location management
  • Production office coordination
  • Props
  • Set
  • Dressing and wardrobe
Courses are taught by leading professionals in the motion picture industry. All instructors are members of their respective industry unions. The program includes information on union membership. Students work with actual equipment used in the film industry.
This year’s program runs from June 1 to June 26. Classes meet from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday, for the four weeks. The schedule includes a one-week overview of the industry, two weeks of specialized training in one area, then one week of integrated production where students work collaboratively to make a short film. Total cost for the program is $500.  An option to receive 6 college-level credits at Middlesex is available for an additional cost.
Graduates of the program may have opportunities to intern on major film and TV productions coming to the state during the coming year.  Several students from last year’s program have worked on productions this year.
Application forms and further information are available from the program’s website:  Connecticut Film Industry Web Site
The program is part of the state tax initiative to increase the film and television  production workforce in the state. It is coordinated by the Office of Workforce Competitiveness in cooperation with the Film Division of the Connecticut Commission on Culture & Tourism.
