Program Receives Economic Development
Award Middlesex Community College has been selected
for a second year to host the Summer Film Industry Training Program. It
will be one of just two sites in the state, and the only community
college, to run the program. The other site will be at Quinnipiac
University in Hamden. The program hosted by
Middlesex during the summer of 2008 received an award March 26 from the
Connecticut Economic Development Association (CEDAS) for its
contribution to economic development in the state. The film
program is an intensive month-long training designed to prepare
students to work as crew in the motion picture and television
industries. Specialization areas within the program
include:
Camera
Sound
Lighting & grip
Assistant
director
Script supervisor
Location management
Production office
coordination
Props
Set
Dressing and wardrobe
Courses are taught by leading professionals in the motion picture
industry. All instructors are members of their respective industry
unions. The program includes information on union membership. Students
work with actual equipment used in the film
industry. This year’s program runs from June 1 to
June 26. Classes meet from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through
Friday, for the four weeks. The schedule includes a one-week overview
of the industry, two weeks of specialized training in one area, then
one week of integrated production where students work collaboratively
to make a short film. Total cost for the program is $500. An
option to receive 6 college-level credits at Middlesex is available for
an additional cost. Graduates of the program may have
opportunities to intern on major film and TV productions coming to the
state during the coming year. Several students from last
year’s program have worked on productions this

program is part of the state tax initiative to increase the film and
television production workforce in the state. It is
coordinated by the Office of Workforce Competitiveness in cooperation
with the Film Division of the Connecticut Commission on Culture
& Tourism.
