In all aspects of life, Donna Hylton is passionate about
helping people succeed. She works to infuse hope in those who need to be inspired to reach their full potential.
At MxCC, she has
been able to achieve that goal as professor of information systems and computer
programming, where she helps students understand that technology is key
to solving problems and realizing productivity gains – in business and in life.
Donna started
teaching at Middlesex Community College as an adjunct in 1997. Today she serves
as professor and coordinator of the Information Systems and Management
Information Systems Programs at the school. In 2009 she worked with students to
launch the MxCC Computer Club, which offers free computer clinics, seminars and
demonstrations for students, faculty, staff, and the community. Donna continues to serve as faculty
advisor to the club, helping students organize events such as the computer and
electronics recycling drive (see photos from last year's drive here), and the hats, mittens, gloves, and scarves
collection for the St. Vincent de Paul Soup Kitchen.
Donna began her technology career in college while working
as a data center coordinator in New York City. She has worked as an end-user database specialist,
programmer, systems team leader, and information systems manager. She earned her undergraduate degree in
administrative computer systems from Hofstra University, and her master’s
degree in management information systems from Central Connecticut State
University. She is completing her second master’s degree in professional
counseling.
As a faculty member at MxCC, Donna knows she has the awesome
privilege of making a difference, one student at a time. Whether it is teaching
students how to hone their skills, leading the Computer Club, helping senior
citizens to grasp the benefits of the computer, or enlightening children to the
wonders of technology, the joy is the same – the tilling of a fertile mind. Donna
believes the wonderful, nurturing environment at Middlesex Community College
makes it possible to inspire people from all strata of life to be the best they
can be.
Off campus, Donna remains busy with her family and
with many community-based activities.
In 2002, she created “Adventures in Learning” for the free JOY
Camp for kids in Middletown. This
educational camp (which she continues to direct) uses
creativity and innovation to get children excited about computers, academics,
and the arts.
Donna also frequently leads humanitarian mission trips to serve
at homeless shelters, distribute backpacks to needy children, or facilitate teen
leadership development. She and her husband have helped build schools and
orphanages in the Philippines, worked to support orphans in Kenya, and helped provide
care and training for missionaries in Italy and Peru.
Donna enjoys traveling to places such as Hawaii, Italy,
Hong Kong, South Korea, Aruba, Barbados, Puerto Rico, Holland, France, and the
Cayman Islands.
