*Every student should create an academic plan during their first semester on campus.
*An Academic Plan outlines the courses you plan on taking each semester until you graduate or complete your planned program of study.
*You should create this outline as a course list, by semester, and plan on taking a reasonable* number of credits each semester. The number of credits you take will depend on many factors. Some students may take 2 courses (6-7 credits per semester) while others may be taking 5 courses (15+ credits). You should discuss your plan and goals with an Academic Advisor.
*As you make this plan you will also need to consider prerequisites and frequency of course offerings. For example: you may need to take BIO 211 Anatomy and Physiology. A pre-requisite for this course is BIO 121, however there are also pre-requisites of English and Math to be eligible to take BIO 121. You must determine which courses are required as pre-requisites before you create your Academic Plan. Your Advisor will help you with sorting through all these details.
*See the example Academic Plans below. (Note: these are merely examples)
The primary responsibility of an academic advisor is to guide students
in making wise selections of course offerings with careful attention to
institutional policies and degree requirements. In addition, effective
advising will also assist students in identifying available internal
and external resources that will have a positive impact on their
experience at Middlesex Community College. Consideration of each
student as a unique individual with unique needs is recognized as the
foundation of our advising program. We approach advising as a
collaborative effort between the student and advisor: an alliance
aiming for improvement, clarification, and evaluation to ensure that
the career, educational/ transfer, and goals of the student are met.
